History
At the end of 1968, the US Army issued contracts to several companies to conduct research on a program to create a multi-purpose tactical transport helicopter for amphibious operations and cargo delivery. The program was called UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Air System), and it specified the following requirements: a crew of three, transportation of 11-15 soldiers in the cockpit, a power plant with two engines, and the ability to transport the helicopter itself inside transport aircraft. Of the nine companies that submitted designs for the UTTAS helicopter, the U.S. Department of Defense selected two - Boeing-Vertol and Sikorsky. In 1976, after completion of the tests, the Army selected Sikorsky as the winner of the UTTAS program, and a contract was signed for the production of the first batch of helicopters, which received the Army designation UH-60A Black Hawk (the series designation is Sikorsky S-70).
